This guide introduces the wooden dummy, a valuable tool for developing trapping, striking, and kicking skills; butterfly knives, deadly blades for both attack and defense; and the six-and-a-half pole, a simple but devastating weapon in the hands of the Wing Chun fighter. The author stresses the need to keep the mind open to new possibilities, while at the same time preserving the valuable inheritance of classical Wing Chun.

This book wasn't written with a non or beginner student in mind as the book only contains the bare bones i.e. each movement of the wooden dummy form and butterfly knife form, without really explaining each movement to the depth your own sifu would. I feel this is because Dr Smith wanted to condense his text moving away from books which misinform the reader by attempting to over or incorrectly explain movements, thus allowing each student to interpret the form according to his own sifu's teaching. The down side of this approach is that others may think the book is over simplified, and the pole form is virtually nonexistent, but the complete wooden dummy and butterfly knife movements are all there in picture format, and as these forms are VERY hard to get hold of I thank Dr smith for providing this well illustrated and concise book, however don't be fooled, you won't become a good martial artist by just by repeating the movements, you will also need a good sifu and class to try them out and perfect your kung fu. That said if you do practice these movements you'll probably find you'll have a serious advantage over non-dummy practitioners, making training a lot more enjoyable!.
