Taking his normal approach (a blend of very
traditional karate with an almost scientific analysis), Nakayama
introduces kumite with example fights and some of the best
names in Karate history.
His stance on sports karate being unchanged,
he addresses how the skills learned in kumite (timing, awareness,
"reading" your opponent) can be useful in real conflicts.
A knowledge of karate basics is essential before
kumite is begun (in my opinion) and I would reccomend this
book to shotokan green belts (6th kyu) and above. Anyone of
a lesser rank should consider Best Karate Kumite 1, the predeccesor.
To gain the knowledge of fundamental karate,
Best Karate Comprehensive (the first volume in the series)
should be ordered. This is the bible of the Shotokan karate
world: basic techniques, stances, training methods, doctrine,
all examined in meticulous detail by one of the best Karateka
(karate people) of all time.
