| Known
for his superior technical abilities and his unique and innovative
moves, Jean Jacques Machado now presents his entire Brazilian
jiu-jitsu system in book form for the first time. Detailed
is a complete repertoire of jiu-jitsu moves to handle any
situation that arises, whether on the mat or on the street.
Techniques are not presented in isolation, but rather through
a series of moves that guide practitioners from an initial
threat or opportunity all the way through to a submission
hold. The subtle interplay between various strategies is depicted,
allowing students to choose the right attack or defense every
time. Over 100 step-by-step martial arts positions are demonstrated.

I bought JJ Machado's book with some excitement,
as I had heard good things about it. I wasn't disappointed.
The book starts with an interesting introduction. Unlike some
other BJJ texts this intro doesn't try to sell the 'Gracie
legend', but explains from Jean-Jacques' views on the right
approach to training, getting the basics right, the guard,
maintaining position and a small section called 'The Chess
Match'. This last section is the most important, as JJ Machado
explains the difference between this book and previous BJJ
texts.
What is the difference? Structure. BJJ is a
fast, moving art. Its not just 'this is an arm bar'. You need
to know the setups, and what happens after your opponent blocks
your submission attempt. As such, the book starts with pulling
guard into guard passing, into cross side attacks and then
into attacks against a turtled opponent, etc Basically if
you drilled position change this is a typical sequence. It
may not sound like much but compared to what many felt the
best BJJ textbook on the market (Techniques and Theories by
Renzo and Royler Gracie) this structure is refreshing and
logical. The Renzo+Royler book on the other hand jumped from
move to move with no rhyme or reason.
Apart from making the book easier to read, the
sound structure of this book makes it easy to think and learn
techniques for the 'what if...' situation. For example, if
this guard pass doesn't work, what can I do next? JJ Machado
describes this as his machine gun tactics - he'll fire one
hundred bullets knowing at least some'll hit the mark - i.e.
try allot of different stuff then something's going to work.
And the book enables you to plan ahead, to try the machine
gun tactic, to plan ahead - which all harks back to the 'Chess
Match' which Jean-Jacques discusses in his introduction.
The book also contains a section of no-gi techniques.
This is invaluable for guys (and gals) who train no-gi, whether
from an MMA perspective of a submission wrestling perspective.
JJ Machado is well known as one the best guys without the
gi, repeatedly submitting larger opponents at the Abu Dhabi
submission championships. The techniques shown in this section
are similar, but with subtle and intelligent alterations that
make all the difference.
Jean-Jacques Machado has the reputation of being
one of the most technical grapplers in the world, but also
of being one of the best teachers (I know from personal experience
that the two don't always go together). This book demonstrates
his abilities as a teacher excellently - the structure mirrors
the processes that (should) go through a grappler's mind when
he's sparring/fighting.
