It must be said first that when you order this
book you actually receive Volume 1: The Top Game, a later
volume for the bottom game I guess will come out in due course
which is fine as they're not terribly expensive anyway and
it just means you get more detail.
The book itself is very informative and goes
into lots of detail for each section and each move or drill.
It starts off with some background information on BJJ, Royce
Gracie and the helpers, and Royce's philosophy and strategy
behind his technique, as well as belt and positional hierarchies.
The book then moves on to Closing the Distance & Clinching,
where it goes into great detail on all the main takedowns,
clinches, how to measure distance, counters, etc. This section
also includes a lot of drills for you to practice with a partner.
Then the book goes on to cover sections on passing the guard,
side control, knee-on-stomach, mount, side-mount, taking the
back, basically all the top game positions with their relevant
submissions, counters and lots of handy tips and details.
As Royce states over and over at the beginning,
he prefers the idea of perfecting the simple moves in bjj
as these are the ones you will use a lot more than complex
moves, and the ones that will invariably work. He goes into
detail on how to perfect all the foundation techniques, different
ways of training, and different levels of awareness and skill
in bjj.
This is a great book as nothing is left out.
Every technique is described meticulously, telling you where
to place every hand, foot, leg, head etc and what to watch
out for in return. The photos are clear, colorful and numerous,
with zoomed in features to highlight details such as grip.
Buy this book whether you're a veteran or a beginner in bjj/nhb
as I'm sure you'll enjoy it as I did.
