Fut Sau (Guarding
Hand of Buddha)
Far from being just a symbol of goodwill its role is significant
as a 'Guarding Bridge' for many kung fu styles. Its focus and application
is central to Kiu Sau (Bridging), because from this single position
we are able to create a platform or root from which all other bridging
tools are connected...

Animal Styles
In the world of martial arts there are few styles that capture
the imagination in the way that the animal styles do. Even though
these systems are famous, and often commonly practiced in Gong Fu,
they are commonly misunderstood and misrepresented. In this article
I hope to shed some light on the animal styles themselves and their
relevance to modern training...

Temple Fighting Skills - Stamina
When you are training for a fight, it is vitally important that
you build up your stamina. A marathon runner has very good stamina
but they would never have the stamina to fight in the ring because
a fighter's stamina is totally different. In this article I will
concentrate on the first part of a fighter's stamina training; running.
In future articles I will concentrate on bag work, pad work...

Shaolin Chi Sao
'Chi Sau' which translated means 'Sticking Hands' has had much
exposure throughout the world through the Wing Chun System . However
besides the Poon Sau or Lok Sau ( Rolling hands) platform used in
most Wing Chun Systems, there also exist a less well known and obscure
platform called 'Teng Sau' which translated mean 'Listening Hands'.
This system of Chi Sau until now has not been widely exposed to
the general public, it roots coming from the Shaolin Ancestors system.
Its original conception designed to control and subdue rather than
to strike and maim. Though more modern versions have been modified
to include more strikes...

Kung Fu Exercises Which Promotes Agile Footwork And Intricate Hand
Techniques
When many people think of Shaolin Kung Fu they think of meditation
and chi. While it is true that Shaolin Kung Fu does stress meditation
and the use of inner energy, it is actually an external form of
Chinese martial arts. This means that it is more involved in the
external powers and forces. There are many styles of Shaolin Kung
Fu which can include many types of attacks and defenses including
joint locks, punching, kicking, throws, straight blocking, force
direction, and many more. However, the two things that most types
of schools of Shaolin Kung Fu all stress is fast handwork and quick
footwork. Many Shaolin Kung Fu exercises promote these skills...

Shaolin, the
Kingdom of Kung Fu
Ah, the immortal words of dueling Shaolin warriors. Though dialog
like this is mainly the stuff of low-budget Hong Kong movies, there
is in fact a place where such challenges are still uttered. Not
to the death, of course, but between students at Shaolin Si, China’s
most famous Kung Fu temple...

Philosophy Takes Its Guiding Principle Of Enlightenment Through
Meditation
Shaolin kung fu is not just about defending yourself against an
attacker or inflicting bodily harm. Shaolin martial arts also stress
discipline, respect for yourself and others, patience, and being
humble even in victory. The mental training of Shaolin martial arts
helps prepare the student for any events that may come. Being physically
prepared for an altercation is good, but if you are not mentally
prepared you will not be focused enough to use the tools that your
body has. This is why Shaolin meditation is such an important part
of the Shaolin martial arts training. Meditation may not be literally
practicing your physical tools, but it allows your mind to make
better use of those tools...

If
You Could Choose Your Shaolin Kung Fu Master, Who Would It Be?
One of the bull sessions that Steve, Aaron and I had recently,
after closing down the dojo, was sort of like fantasy league baseball,
only for shaolin kung fu masters. Now, in fantasy baseball (another
avocation of mine), one of the positions you can fill is “team manager”,
and the team manager helps your stats. For a martial arts school,
a good teacher is reflected in how well his students learn, and
how well his style spreads...

5 Tips On
Shaolin Kung Fu Exercises
It was Michael Tyson's second day at our Kung-Fu school and I took
a hard look at him. He was built like King Kong, was as hairy as
King Kong, sported Mr. T's hairstyle, but he had Oprah Winfrey's
puckered lips and Michael Jackson's kohl-lined eyes. This made me
a wee bit suspicious of his intentions, but I was in full concentration
mode as I began teaching him some basic Shaolin Kung Fu tips...
