- Bruce Lee's Fighting Method - Basic Training, Volume 2
What is it about a man like Bruce Lee that has made him a martial
arts legend? While the fancy stunts of Jackie Chan and Jet Li provide
us with heart stopping entertainment, most of these feats employ
the use of trick photography, strings and trampolines. What is so
intriguing about Bruce Lee is that the man was real and so were
his martial arts. Regardless of who comes and goes at the box office,
there will never be another Bruce Lee...

The
Way of the Martial Artist - Achieving Success in Martial Arts and
in Life by Kevin Brett
There are some people that treat the practice of martial arts like
any other hobby or exercise class. It is something to do a couple
times a week. Then there are those of us that the study, practice,
and teaching of martial arts means so much more. Regardless of the
specific art or discipline, regardless of the country...

Charlie
Nelson and His Little Red Book of Self Defense Authentic World War
II Close Combat Heritage
Today it seems like there's a martial arts school on every block
and many of them are of dubious quality. Most of the students are
children, and they're taught some form of combat sport. Some schools
offer self defense training or promise a good workout, but few teach
real combat martial arts. There was a time though when people did
learn the practical skills they needed to survive a real street
fight. Among the few instructors who truly understood combat martial
arts and self defense was Charlie Nelson...

Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting,
I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my

Arts Book Review - Championship Fighting by Jack Dempsey
If you want to learn how to really punch, and if you can find a
copy of the following book in either its original hardback version,
or the reprinted paperback version, I strongly recommend that you
purchase it and read it. However, be advised that it has been out-of-print
for sometime and can be quite expensive if you are lucky enough
to find one to purchase in the first place...

Arts Book Review - Complete Krav Maga by Darren Levine and John Whitman
I just finished reading "Complete Krav Maga" by Darren Levine and
John Whitman for the second time in as many weeks and I have to
say that it is a very well done book covering the basic techniques
needed to advance through the ranks of Krav Maga from yellow belt
all the way up to and including brown belt. However, having said
that, it should be noted that as the author so firmly states...

Arts Book Review - The Way of Sanchin Kata by Kris Wilder
I just recently finished reading Kris Wilder’s, “The Way of Sanchin
Kata,” and boy let me tell you I was thoroughly impressed. It has
been years since I first learned this kata, and embarrassingly almost
as long since I last practiced it. Kris’s breakdown and explanation
of this kata and all its finer points is nothing short of remarkable
and is without a doubt one of the finest examples of this kata that
I have ever seen in literature...

Arts Book Review: Palgue 7-8 by Kim Pyung Soo
Although there were a few fairly good techniques demonstrated,
I really don’t know why the author included these and the other
brief sections in this book other than perhaps as reference material
since it doesn’t really add to the focus of the book. There truly
is no need to go into self-defense technique...

Arts Book Review: Palgue 4-5-6 by Kim Pyung Soo
This book, along with its two companion volumes, demonstrates the
correct movements in this particular series of forms which are required
for advancement in most Tae Kwon Do schools. These forms are generally
required to advance in rank for the intermediate student in Tae
Kwon Do. If I recall correctly, I learned these three forms in order
to advance from green belt to blue belt, but it has been awhile
so I might be mistaken...

Arts Book Review: Karate Kata Heian #5 by Masatoshi Nakayama
This review is on the last volume in this truly wonderful series
of books that focuses on the Karate katas required for advancement
through the colored belt ranks on your way to first degree black
belt. I just finished rereading this fifth volume in the series,
“Karate Kata: Heian 5” by Masatoshi Nakayama for the first time
in quite a few years and was reminded of the first time I had purchased
this and the other four books in the series when I was first starting
out upon my martial arts journey whose primary focus in those early
days was Karate and Tae Kwon Do. These books were some of the first
ones I owned concerning the martial arts and kata or forms in particular...

Arts Book Review: Karate Kata Heian #4 by Masatoshi Nakayama
This book, along with the other four in the series, begins with
the author starting out with the customary introduction and follows
that up with a section on the proper execution of a kata and the
seven performance points to focus on. He also explains the five
do’s and don’ts of kata. This is followed by the focus of the book
which is on kata Heian or Pinan #4, which is a required form for
the upper rank karate students...
