The Top 5 Predictions For the Future of Mixed Martial Arts

Author: Kosta Megas
Date Posted: February 09, 2009

I don't know of any other sport that has grown as much as Mixed Martial Arts has in the past 15 years.

Here are some predictions about where I feel the sport is headed in the next 10 years.

1) I believe it will surpass boxing in terms of money the fighters receive. (We're not there yet) Boxing actually still out sells MMA in terms of pay per view dollars brought in and still has higher purses available to championship bouts.)

2) There will be 3 different organizations that will buy out all the smaller ones leaving 3 main organizations. 2 of which will be based in the US and one in Japan. This will come though, after many different smaller organizations come and go.

3) MMA will be available in most traditional martial arts dojos. I predict that it will become a standard offering at most dojos even traditional ones. This has already started happening but will continue to most of the traditional schools.

4) MMA events will take place on every continent in the world. Again this is starting as popularity spreads and UFC president Dana White has already stated that the UFC will start putting on shows in many other countries including Asian countries, European countries and even the Middle East.

5) MMA champions will become household names. We haven't seen this yet, but remember how Mike Tyson, Muhammed Ali, and even George Foreman and Evander Holyfield became household names. Even people who didn't watch Boxing knew who they were. If you look at other sports, you have Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, and David Beckham, to name just a few. Most people have heard of these names even though they aren't fans of the sports the athletes compete in. I predict they same will happen in MMA. Most people will be able to tell you who the champions are even though they won't watch the sport. Some fighters will even become known outside the sport, that's when it will have fully become mainstream.

Well, there you have it. I think it's obvious by these predictions that the sport of MMA is nowhere near it's peak in terms of potential popularity. Let's just hope that with this popularity we won't lose the characteristics that make the martial arts so unique and special. Honour, respect and character. We've already seen some decline of these personal attributes so a degree in MMA.

Let's hope the best part of the martial arts isn't lost for the future generations, something I'm optimistic won't happen.
