The art and science of concealed weapons detection lies in the
blending of a number of factors:
1 - The person is a "person of interest" as law
enforcement personnel like to say, that is, he looks and acts suspicious.
2 - Your "gut" is telling you that something is
wrong with the situation and the individual. Always, but always
trust your gut feelings. They were put there by God for a reason.
3 - You are in an environment of crime where gun
violence is very likely to happen. Taking into consideration that
there are other reasons why you would believe that this person could
be carrying a concealed weapon, let's us look at some of the common
tell-tale signs.
Tell-Tale Sign #1 - When Running, You Notice That The Individual
Is Pressing His Hand Against His Clothing - This is a possible indication
that his hand is attempting to stabilize the up and down jogging
motion of a gun.
Tell-Tale Sign #2 - A Suspicious Person Is Walking Up Towards You,
And He Only Swings One Arm To The Side - In this case, if he if
harboring a weapon, by swinging only one arm to the side, he could
be using the other arm to stabilize the firearm preventing the shirt
tail or garment part that is concealing the weapon from flying open.
Tell-Tale Sign #3 - If You Are At A Standoff, Observe If The Suspect
Suddenly Looks Down - When a person who is concealing a weapon suddenly
looks down to, say his waist, he is also likely to try to move his
hand toward it as quickly as possible.
* Self Defense Move - Never, ever allow any aggressor go into
his pockets while arguing with you. You must grab the hand moving
toward the pocket and shove it deeper into the pocket, always
holding and controlling the hand as you become aggressive, by
kicking the groin, head-butting, biting the nose, cheek or the
side of the face, until his hand removes from his pocket. You
now of course must accelerate your attack, making sure that you
don't allow for him to recover and go back into his pocket.
Tell-Tale Sign #4 - Clothing Of The Suspect Tugs More To One Side
- Observe clothing that pulls or tugs to one side. This is a possible
indication of the weight of a firearm that is pulling it.
Tell-Tale Sign #5 - The Center-line Of The Pants In The Crotch
Or Buttock Area Pulls Excessively To One Side - This happens because
the weight of the firearm is pulling to one side because of the
gun being placed inside the waistband of the front or of the back.
We must always come back to situational awareness. Once you have
sufficient cause to believe in the danger of a person concealing
a weapon, you now must exercise your judgment. If you are not in
harms way, then it is your obligation to report this immediately
to nearby law enforcement or security personnel. It is most advisable
then to just remove yourself from the situation. If you are at a
standoff, you must know and exercise your reality-based self protection
options.
