Punching Harder - Punch Through Like a Hot Knife Into Butter

Are you a heavier martial artist? Other martial artists may think
of us as "slower," but we have several advantages. One of the advantages
has to do with our punch possibilities. How would you like your
punching to be so hard, that the punch melts through any resistance
like a hot knife going into butter?
I am a 'heavier martial artist.' I weigh 277 pounds as of this
writing, though I am working on lowering that number. Many would
think that heavy martial artists are at a big disadvantage. You
are at a disadvantage, as long as you attempt to fight like a thin,
wiry martial artist. You have to develop your own customized skills
-- play to your strengths as you minimize your weaknesses.
Punching Harder Using Your Whole Body
Since you are a heavy martial artist, you have to learn to use
your weight to your advantage. And one advantage is putting your
weight into your punches.
This does not mean drawing your fist back before swinging at your
target or in any way telegraphing your intent. You still employ
all of the technique and precision of a 'lighter martial artist.'
The difference is you have more weight behind your punch. If the
bad guy holds his hands in front of his (or her) face, you punch
over and into them and collapse the fists and or arms right into
his own head.
You can do this because of your power. If you are facing a fighter
with his hands in a decent guard position, you know that with your
power, you can punch through the smallest of openings. Your strike
widens the opening.
Whether you are punching over and through, up and through from
underneath, or wedging an opening to the side, you don't find much
resistance getting to your attacker. Imagine a hammer busting through
... toothpicks. And when you happen to hit a vulnerable area, your
punching harder will really work to your advantage.
All of this because you are heavy and know how to put your weight
behind your punch. For you, the key to punching harder is tapping
into the power that your body size can generate.
