This article will explain how to perform a one inch punch and train
with it to develop some serious, devastating power. Read on to find
out the secret to this mystical punch.
The one inch punch is a motion made famous by Bruce Lee. Lee was
able to punch an opponent or heavy bag from about an inch away and
send the object or person flying. This motion was also featured
in the movie Kill Bill, when Uma Thurman's character punches her
way out of a coffin.
Well, this article will not help you punch your way out of a coffin,
but it will help you perform a one inch punch with terrific power
after a little training. Here are the steps to develop an opponent-dropping
one inch punch:
1. Using a makiwara, outstretch your fingers flat, almost like
you are going to shake someone's hand. Touch your fingertips to
the makiwara. Leave your hand in that position.
2. Make a fist from that distance, it will probably be closer to
2-3 inches away, but it's still called the one inch punch. This
is your starting distance for the strike.
3. Punch from that distance, but instead of throwing upper body
into it, as most punches go, this punch is powered by your legs,
which are much stronger.
4. As you punch you twist your hip and simultaneously use your
body weight to throw the fist into the makiwara as fast as possible.
The speed of the punch, combined with the twist of the hips and
using your legs for power, can knock a person right off their feet
if done correctly after a lot of training.
To train for the punch you will need a makiwara board, which you
can create at home fairly inexpensively, or you can order a custom
made one for $250-$350. Start with your hand flat with your fingertips
touching the makiwara board each time. Punch from that position,
quickly making a fist as you strike. Repeat this following a standard
makiwara training regimen, each time touching your fingertips to
the board and punching from that position. After a few months of
practice, you should have a fairly powerful punch.
