The Judo Crusader was recently on an airplane and he was reading
a book called "The Strategy Paradox" by Michael Raynor. This book
was absolutely phenomenal. So phenomenal that The Judo Crusader
immediately ordered the book as soon as the plane landed. I had
to have it. And I'll tell you why.
Michael Raynor, in The Strategy Paradox, talked about 4 things
in his book that I have, can, do and will continue to apply to Judo.
And I'm telling you this because I want you to apply it to you judo
career as well, no matter if you are a coach or athlete. The beautiful
thing about this is that I cover some things which are very similar
to this, yet more extensive in my groundbreaking work The Gold Mettle
Plan.
Thing #1 - ANTICIPATE
In judo, just as in life, you need to develop scenarios for the
future. As you watch film and video and prepare for matches, you
NEED to anticipate the outcome of what your competitor may do or
may try to do. You need to anticipate what may happen when you planned
strategies works and/or when it doesn't work. This is oh-so important.
Some of you just believe that you have to pre-plan and you know
what? You're right. But RIGHT NOW, your pre-planning approach is
LIMITED by your currently knowledge base. DO NOT ALLOW YOUR LIMITATIONS
to limit you. Break beyond your limitations to make sure you can
reach higher level of understanding. When you do this, you will
understand the process of Anticipation Planning and the process
of futuring.
It Is Always Wise To Look Ahead, But Difficult To Look Further
Than You Can See
Get the knowledge so that you may increase your vision.
Thing #2 - Formulate
You must create a strategic framework for action. You must formulate
design and create a way (or a map) to get to your desired destination.
Realize where you want to "end up" and how you want to get there.
More often than not, people don't plan to fail, they fail to plan.
You MUST formulate a optimal strategy for success. Without this,
you are not training to win, nor are you training properly. In all
honesty, you are flat out FOOLING yourself, plain and simple.
Sun Tzu said, “All men can see these tactics whereby I conquer,
but what none can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved.”
Get the knowledge and information so that you can PROPERLY form
a plan and formulate a STRATEGY for achieving greatness on the mat
and in life.
Thing #3 - Accumulate
This is the most important piece of this piece of written articulation.
You must acquire as much knowledge about your what is going to be
required in order to make your "dream" a reality. And THEN you must
GO GET THOSE THINGS!! If you know that you have to move and get
better practice partners. Then freaking move! If you know that you
need help with grip fighting, then get the grip fighting information
that you need. If you know that you have to get in better shape,
then get in shape. You MUST get and accumulate the things and resources
that are necessary for your development and success on and off the
mat. If you must travel, then travel. If you must get your hands
on another coach, then get one. Do what it is that you NEED to do.
Thing #4 - Operate
Implement and put into motion everything that you've gathered,
accumulated, formulated and envisioned. Like Nike says, "Just Do
It".
