Simple Knife Defense - Responding Appropriately
Author: Jon Hines

Before we go into this subject, the best knife defense is to run
away, so please keep this in mind. In this first segment of Simple
Knife Defense.I want to address the topic of Responding to a knife
attack appropriately. This is when someone gets in your face right
there and now, no time to think but to react. In this case we will
respond appropriately. Some will not agree with this method, but
it is from personal observation through numerous testings and interviews
with victims of assaults and knife attacks, that shows the best
response is usually the simplest way. The following information
are principles for self defense and knife defense.
I want to emphasize the importance of covering up when you are
first attacked. This means hands up, elbows in. This should be your
very first instinct to do, an example of this is when someone throws
you a ball, your hands usually comes up to catch. This principle
applies for self defense and knife defense. The reason for this
type of response is because its natural and uses gross motor skills,
(big muscle group such as arms and legs) you do not have to memorize
this. Once taught and trained it becomes second nature. The use
of gross motor skills shines while under stress during a physical
assault and a knife attack (fight or flight syndrome). Another thing
to consider is when you are covering you are minimizing your injury.
I have tested numerous scenarios relating to self-defense situation
for the streets. I would randomly initiate attacks with or without
a training knife, and 99% of the time most people respond to these
attacks, as if it was a slug fest, then they realize, oh I've been
stabbed and cut. The issue of responding to a knife attack and using
this method of covering up for knife defense works well. Yes, you
will be cut and stabbed initially, but you will not die from 1 or
2 cuts, it is from extreme multiple cuts (20 plus). Theres no way
around this, there is no technique in this world that will keep
you from not getting cut, under high stress, low light situation.
This cover up in knife defense or any type of physical assault
is to protect yourself (and vital parts) and then move on to other
options. So in this first segment of Simple Knife Defense and assaults,
incorporate that cover up first. You may think this is a slow defense,
because you were taught to intercept their attack from other martial
arts. For the streets its totally different than in a dojo, we don't
walk around with our hands up in a ready posture in a daily lives.
This even goes to you Law Enforcement officer out there. Just because
you carry a pistol, taser, OC spray, Asp baton that you're exempt
from this method of response. If you understand that 21 foot rule,
then you are familiar with the Tueller drill. In the next segment
we will continue with the best option for self defense and knife
defense after the cover up, and that is to create distance so that
you may escape. Watch your 6...
